The School-Based Assessment Projects are an interlinked set of research projects which aim to investigate and support the transition from norm-referenced external language assessment to criterion-referenced school-based assessment in senior secondary English teaching in Hong Kong schools. The research is funded by a number of university and government agencies, including the Faculty of Education of The University of Hong Kong, the Education and Manpower Bureau through its Quality Education Fund, the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority, and the University Grants Committee.

Objectives

1. To identify and describe a representative range of secondary English language teachers' existing assessment orientations and barriers to change, including the factors that influence and shape
   their assessment decisions in their classroom;
   
   
2. To develop, trial and evaluate a range of content and context-appropriate school-based formative and summative school-based assessment activities, instruments and procedures for secondary subject English;
   
   
3. To identify and describe the range and type of teacher and school-level support needed for the effective development of such innovative assessment;
   
   
4. To develop professional development materials to aid teachers in implementing school-based assessmentg;
   
   
5. To document and disseminate innovative and effective assessment practices via DVD/CD-roms
   and existing websites, and research publications;
   
   
6. To investigate the impact of the introduction of standards-referenced school-based assessment (SBA) in Hong Kong secondary schools.
